Taxi council flags price rise in India


Indian taxi company Taxi Owners Federation of India (POI) members hold a rally in New Delhi, India, December 11, 2016. The taxi company, owned by India's top cab hailing group Mahindra & Mahindra, will raise the price of its fares to $200 from $80 to help finance the expansion of its operations in a country where the average taxi passenger spends around Rs 2 lakh per year on trips."With every taxicab passenger, we are investing heavily to expand our footprint," said Sridhar Prasad, POI Chairman, speaking to reporters about his recent meeting with representatives of the major taxi service providers.Prasad announced a raft of projects, such as launching a toll-free phone app, providing taxi services through an online hub, and offering discounts to customers who travel by taxi.A taxi driver in Mumbai, who wished to remain anonymous, told ET that this decision should have been made long ago. "You think that we just pay the fare? If we want to get the cheapest rate for our customers, we need to charge more to them," he said.Prasad said POI had asked the companies to raise fares, but said the industry should be wary of imposing any higher tax. "We will charge Rs 200 for a cab ride, and the price should be Rs 20. The industry will be wary and will resist. There will be an issue," he predicted.While the proposal is not new in India, the move was expected because the average income level of taxicab drivers is relatively high. India's taxi industry was the largest in the world in 2010, according to the World Taxis Association (WTA).The WTA, in its annual report on taxicab, cited the rising income of taxi drivers as the main reason behind the rise in ride prices."Taxicab drivers earn their wages on average between Rs 1,300 and Rs 1,400 a month, depending on their income level. If the rate is raised, their income will increase, but it would make their journey less comfortable and expensive," the WTA said.Prasad said POI had proposed raising fares by an additional 30% but the companies were against this."Taxis are the backbone of our country and they are essential. In India, taxi drivers are considered like our friends and we owe them so much. It is our responsibility to maintain our relationship," Prasad told ET.

Five people injured including elderly woman in dog attack on railway tracks - police

Seven people were arrested after a dog and a backpack were attacked by a mob at the railway tracks in the eastern Paris suburb of Clichy-sous-Bois.

The dogs attacked two girls - aged 13 and 14 - after one of them fell under the influence of beer during a party in the St. Jean-Talon area of the capital.

A second girl was hit in the head by the backpack.

The suspects, later identified as French national Dimitri Mignone, 23, and Moroccan nationals Said Belkacemi, 31 and Mohamed Sallouche, 26, escaped when police arrived.

All three of them had been previously arrested in connection with the attack last year, which left 13 dead and over 100 injured.

The three had originally been charged with attempted murder in relation to the attack but were cleared.

In addition to attacking the girls, the men allegedly attacked two taxi drivers and one car cleaner and attempted to run a dog over.

It is the first case of its kind in France.

They were arrested after fleeing the scene.
